Jpegdump - An Overview

I have written a small tool named jpegdump. One of its function is to make an binary image copy of a memory card an extract all included jpeg files, even if the files have been deleted (but not overwritten).

The current version jpegdump version 1.18 (less than 100 KB).

But, please, read the attached documentation, before using the software. This file contains only some overall hints.

The tool is freeware and may be used (at own risk) without any annotations. If you recover some accidently deleted picture, which are valuable for you, I would like to hear from you and part your joys. You can send me a mail to kurt-stege@online.de (Kurt Stege).

Recovering jpeg files

The most useful purpose of jpegdump is to recover deleted jpeg files from memory cards for digital still cameras.

Requirements

You need a windows system (NT, 2000 or XP preferred for 95, 98 or ME), a memory card with deleted files and a memory card reader for this card. Most new digital still cameras have an built-in card reader and can be used for this purpose.

If you are using an old Windows (95, 98 or ME), you need another tool for copying the memory card onto the harddisc. I know about a shareware software called winimage, see www.winimage.com.

How to recover the images

Read the manual in the zip-file near the executable.

What to do before loosing the images

You can rise the chances of recovering deleted images in an accident by using a simple stratgy. And jpegdump cannot recover fragmented jpeg files. So try not to fragment the file system on your memory card. You can do this best, when you delete all files on the memory card after transmitting them to the PC. Don't delete any single files on the memory card. If you want to delete a single image after taking the photo, do it immediately. The last stored picture may be deleted without much risk of fragmentation. Deleting any other image will result in a fragmentation of the free memory in the card, so don't do that, if you want to be prepared for the case of an accident.

What to do after loosing the images

Keep calm, don't store any data on the memory card, until you have used jpegdump (or an other recovering tool) and got the images back. Even, if you have formatted the memory card, you have good chances to recover the lost images.

Jpegdump - When it does not work

If you don't have success with jpegdump, you may try other recovering tools.

You should look out for the professional tool Photo Recovery from LC Technology. This software has a graphical user interface, and, most important, it recovers not only jpeg files but knows a whole bunch of other file types.
